A producer and teacher in the field of opera, Goldovsky was engaged to provide 12-minute background pieces that aired during the intermissions of the Metropolitan Opera's radio broadcasts. Those insider commentaries on opera covered "anything from the lighting problems of Mozart's day to Schopenhauer's philosophy of ethics; from the unpublished pages of 'Carmen' to Rossini's fondness for fresh bologna sausages." Boris Goldovsky (1908 - 2001) was a Russian Empire-born conductor and broadcast commentator, active in the United States. He was an important popularizer of opera in America. As an opera producer, conductor, impresario, and broadcaster he was prominent within the American operatic community between 1946 and 1985. Mary Ellis Peltz (1896 – 1981) was an American drama and music critic, magazine editor, poet and writer on music. In 1936 she became the first chief editor of Opera News, a position she held until 1957 when she founded the Metropolitan Opera's archives. She served as director of the Met's archives from 1957 to 1981. This book would be a terrific gift for the opera fan in your life. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
