St Basil the Great was a highly educated 4th century bishop who was successful in ending the Arian heresy. In his earlier years he opened a school and practiced law before becoming a monk, priest and then Bishop of Ceasaria. Well known for his eloquence, holiness and great charity. He has been named a Doctor of the Church and is considered one of the giants in the early Church. He is the patron of exorcists, hospital administrators, liturgists and monks. St Basil's elder sister, St. Macrina, called the Younger to distinguish her from her grandmother St. Macrina the Elder, was an early Christian consecrated virgin. She was also the sister of Gregory of Nyssa, Naucratius and Peter of Sebaste. Gregory of Nyssa wrote a work entitled Life of Macrina in which he describes her sanctity and asceticism throughout her life. Macrina is significant in that she set the standard for being a holy Early Christian woman. She contributed to her brother's writings and his belief that virginity reflected the "radiant purity of God".
