Galusha A. Grow was a prominent American politician from Pennsylvania. He was born on August 31, 1823, in Ashford, Connecticut, and was raised in a Quaker family. After completing his education, he moved to Pennsylvania and became involved in politics.Grow was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1850 as a member of the Whig Party. He was re-elected as a Republican in 1856 and 1858. During his time in Congress, Grow became known for his staunch opposition to slavery and his advocacy for the rights of African Americans.In 1861, Grow was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives, becoming the youngest person ever to hold that position at the age of 37. He served as Speaker until 1863, during a tumultuous time in American history when the country was embroiled in the Civil War.After leaving Congress in 1863, Grow continued to be active in politics and public service. He served as a delegate to the Pennsylvania constitutional convention in 1873, and as a member of the U.S. Civil Service Commission from 1874 to 1876.Grow died on March 31, 1907, in Glenwood, Pennsylvania, at the age of 83. He is remembered as a champion of civil rights and a skilled politician who made significant contributions to the history of the United States.
