Truman (1884-1972), a veteran of WWI, was a County Judge (1922-1924, 1926-1934), U.S. Senator from Missouri (1935-1945), President Franklin Roosevelt's third Vice President (1945) and President of the United States (1945-1953). Among his many momentous Presidential decisions were dropping atomic bombs on two Japanese cities (1945), the Marshall Plan of economic aid to rebuild war-devastated Europe (1947), the Truman Doctrine of aid to nations resisting Soviet aggression or communist subversion (1947) and sending U.S./U.N. forces to resist armed attack on South Korea (1950). A C-SPAN poll of historians (1999) ranked Truman as America's fifth greatest President, outranked only by Lincoln, Washington and the two Roosevelts.
