Limoges, France, Hand Painted, Schleiger #39 Varianton the Portia Blank #12, Extensive GOLD w/Scalloping & Embossing, circa 1887-1910 DESCRIPTION: This impressive gravy boat with attached underplate was studio decorated in Limoges, France. The extensive gold trim on the handles & rim is very rich looking and accents the embossing & scalloping. The gold daubs are from Schleiger pattern #39 variant and look particularly classy on the Portia blank. The pink & yellow roses with their green leaves really stand out. CONDITION: While this set is classified as used, its condition is superb. We can find no defects or damage. There are no cracks, rubbings, scratches, crazing or hairlines. Overall, the heavy gold trim is solid & glossy. There are no utensil marks. See the photos. DIMENSIONS: The boat is 7 3/8" (spout to spout) by 4" wide while the attached underplate is 8 3/4" by 5 7/8". The overall height is 3 1/4" with a capacity of 12 ounces. HISTORY/MARKS: The American-born David Haviland settled in Limoges, France in 1842 operating a porcelain exporting business to the USA. He purchased white ware from various factories and shipped it to his New York decorating studio. In 1847, he established a decoratin g studio in Limoges. He started producing porcelain in Limoges in 1865 and decorating it on site. His s ons, Charles Edward and Theodore, continued the prosperous business after David’s death in 1879. Theodore left to establish his own firm in 1892. Charles Edward continued Haviland & Co. until his death in 1921. It bankrupt under his son’s leadership in 1930 and the molds were sold in 1931. In 1941, Theodore’s son, William, was able to obtain the rights to the old Haviland & Co. marks and molds and the company was reorganized as Haviland & Co. William retired in 1957 and the company was carried on by his sons. When the sons retired in 1972, management of the company was turned over to the Cerabati Group under the name of Haviland SA. The company remains in business today. The underglaze decorator's mark (in red) on this is mark #13 (Mary Frank Gaston’s Collector’s Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd edition) which was used from 1876-1978 & 1889-1931. There is also the green manufacturer's mark #12 (Gaston) used 1894-1931. This is on the Portia Blank #12 that was patented January 11, 1887 with production into early 1900’s, so time period for this piece is 1887-1910.
