Description: H&Co Limoges Haviland & Co 2 Cabinet Plates Poppies & Mums Hand Painted AMS 1891 A beautiful HAVILAND & Co. Decorative Set of 2 CABINET PLATES on MARSEILLES Mold, Artist Initialed AMS & Dated 1891 on back, RUST RED POPPIES & CHRYSANTHEMUMS w/Green LEAVES & STEMS from Limoges, France DESCRIPTION: A beautiful, classic H & Co. (Haviland & Co.) set of 2 cabinet plates with matching color schemes on the classy Marseilles mold. The artist, AMS, initialed the back of both plates and dated them 1891. The embossed and scalloped plates have gold scrollwork highlighting the embossing. The color palette used is rust red, green, yellow and black on white with gold. The artwork on this is exemplary with the black outlining on the leaves, stems and seed pod with floating petals (on the Poppies). The flower petals are outlined in a darker red color. CONDITION: While this set is classified as used, the condition is superb. We can find no chips, nicks, rubbings, scratches, cracks, hairlines, or repairs. There appears to be no wear to the gold and no wear to the colors and no crazing. Look in the photos to see this. The set is beautiful. DIMENSIONS: The plates have a diameter of 9 5/8" and a height of 1". HISTORY/MARKS: The American-born David Haviland settled in Limoges, France in 1842 operating a porcelain exporting business to the USA. He purchased white ware from various factories and shipped it to his New York decorating studio. In 1847, he established a decorating studio in Limoges. He started producing porcelain in Limoges in 1865 and decorating it on site. His sons, Charles Edward and Theodore, continued the prosperous business after David’s death in 1879. Theodore left to establish his own firm in 1892. Charles Edward continued Haviland & Co. until his death in 1921. It bankrupt under his son’s leadership in 1930 and the molds were sold in 1931. In 1941, Theodore’s son, William, was able to obtain the rights to the old Haviland & Co. marks and molds and the company was reorganized as Haviland & Co. William retired in 1957 and the company was carried on by his sons. When the sons retired in 1972, management of the company was turned over to the Cerabati Group under the name of Haviland SA. The company remains in business today. The underglaze mark (in green) on these is mark #9 (Mary Frank Gaston’s Collector’s Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd edition) which was used from 1888-1896. There is also the green artist initials and date of 1891. The Marseilles mold was patented on January 21, 1890. This seems to date this to the 1891 time period.
