Description: Historical Blue Staffordshire Clews Platter - States design - George Washington C 1820 States pattern large platter made by Clews circa 1820. "Clews Warranted. Staffordshire" and a crown impressed on back. This dish measures 14.75" x 12.25" and stands approximately 1.25" high. It has the wonderful "States" pattern on it with states around the border, Washington in a medallion on the side, Justice blindfolded next to him, and Independence on the right with her war helmet on. In very good vintage shape. No cracks, chips or repairs. There are three little gouge marks in the central image (shown in photo). Deep color and sharp artwork. Look at 4 quadrant pics to see the detail. I included the museum listings just for fun. This platter with a different central image is in The Metropolitan Museum in NYC and the platter with the identical image is in the Minneapolis Institute of Art! In addition, I don't know if this is true, but the platter was displayed for years at my Grandma Dallas' house. She was a direct descendent of George M. Dallas who was Vice-President under Polk. So the platter may have been displayed in the house of the namesake of the city of Dallas and also in the vice-president's residence. Again, not known as a fact but fun to imagine!!!
