The near-victim of several assassination attempts in the 1930s, Hitler realized early in WWII that he would he would be a prime target for the Allied bombing campaigns as the War progressed, and that spending his time in unprotected structures above ground was not going to work, particularly as far as being able to plan and manage battles was concerned. So for the next five years, and even as the War was winding down, he commissioned a series of more than 20 massive underground bunkers to be built across Europe, mostly built from reinforced concrete, that could be used as mobile command centers. These bunkers were typically self sufficient, with ventilation, sleeping, cooking and living quarters, a phone and radio system and supplies to last several months. Most were built by the Todt Organization, which made extensive use of slave labor and concentration camp inmates. The Berlin bunker Hitler spent his last days in was such a structure, as was the Wolfschanze in Poland, scene of the unsuccessful Valkyrie plot on his life. The authors of this book were able to get hold of the diaries and records of the two senior individuals who headed up the bunker construction teams during the War, and have put together a comprehensive volume on the different locations, and how they developed as the War progressed. Quite a fascinating insight into the inner workings of the Nazi regime. This 2004 Hardcover is in very good condition, with no internal markings and nominal dust jacket wear.
