Description: HOLO HOLO Ceremonial Slit Spirit Drum Dr Congo African Tribal Wooden Slit Democratic Republic of the Congo Spirit Signal Drum An old 19th century hand-held slit drum with human head finial and semi-glossy patina.The face has small features and a pointed chin.The Holo reside in southwestern Congo on either side of the border with Angola.They have a matrilineal organization and are traditionally ruled by a queen.Belonging to the rich artistic heritage of the Holo, alongside masks and carved quotidian and prestige objects, are also such handheld slit drums, locally known by the name of Ngokongombo.They consist of a cylindrical resonance corpus with a rectangular slit.Carved out from the same piece the hilt is always in the form of a head sculpture.These slit drums are played with a rod by beating the hollow resonance corpus right on the side of the slit.However, these are not profane instruments for music or dance but serve exclusively as sacred ritual objects, beaten by the priests, clairvoyants, or healers of the Holo at ceremonies and divinations with the aim of invoking the relevant protective spirits.Item Size: approx. 16 inches tall and 3 inches in diameter Country or Region: DR Congo Item Age: 19th century Provenance: Southwestern Congo, Angola, private Las Vegas Collection, USA collection This drum comes from The Estate of a Las Vegas, Nevada Collector.Wife selling his collection from his passing.Met Museum display 1960-70.
