Description: Huge 1756 English Georgian Sterling Silver Salver/Tray w/Fortescue Crest 14.5" Presented is an impressive old English Georgian sterling silver salver or tray. This piece dates to 1756 and was made by William Grundy. The tray is done in a lovely classical form, with shell designs around a scrolled rim. The tray sits on three legs that end in nautilus form feet. The center of the tray has a finely engraved armorial crest beneath a charge of a rampant leopard, above a banner with the Latin motto "Forte Scutem Salus Ducum." This translates to "A strong shield is the salvation of leaders." This is the motto associated with the Fortescue name, particularly because of the resemblance of the first two Latin words to the name, as a sort of pun. This piece is in great condition. The tray has not been machine polished, only polished by hand. There are no splits, no breaks, no dents, no monogram removals, and no repairs. This piece is hallmarked on the underside with the lion passant for sterling silver, the leopard's head crowned for the city of London, the date letter A for 1756, and a maker's mark of WG for William Grundy.
