There were few punk bands as influential as The Voidoids. Bandleader RICHARD HELL wrote Blank Generation, and was the originator of safety pins as fashion accessories (out of necessity—he couldn’t afford clothes). He was in The Heartbreakers, Television and Neon Boys. To put IVAN JULIAN’s abilities in perspective, Hell’s guitarists through the years included Johnny Thunders, Tom Verlaine, and Robert Quiine. Of 2011’s The Naked Flame, one reviewer wrote: Such rousing original compositions as The Waves , Hardwired and A Young Man s Money combine raw-nerved electricity with adult lyrical insight, while the bittersweet You Is Dead meditates upon loss with warmth and humor.
