James McNeill Whistler, Ten O'Clock, 1908 edition w/Custom Slipcase & Chemise

Description: A copy of "Mr. Whistler's Ten O'Clock," printed by the Marion Press, Jamaica, Queens, New York. Softcover, 29 pages. This copy has been preserved in a custom chemise and slipcase. Whistler's famous lecture on art was delivered in London, Oxford, and Cambridge in 1885. The 1908 edition, authorized by Whistler's estate, was a facsimile of the extremely rare original. Condition: The custom slipcase and chemise are in excellent condition. The booklet itself has the following issues: The front and back covers are present but have separated from the rest of the book. A portion of the front cover's fore-edge has worn away. There is a small bookstore sticker (Brentano's) inside the front cover. There is an ink inscription on the title page, which reads as follows: "E.W.G. from L.G. / 'One of the finest bits of prose in the English language'. -- George Moore." There is a pencil notation underneath the printing information, as shown in photo. James McNeill Whistler RBA (1834 – 1903) was an American painter in oils and watercolor, and printmaker, active during the American Gilded Age and based primarily in the United Kingdom. He eschewed sentimentality and moral allusion in painting and was a leading proponent of the credo "art for art's sake". His signature for his paintings took the shape of a stylized butterfly possessing a long stinger for a tail. The symbol combined both aspects of his personality: his art is marked by a subtle delicacy, while his public persona was combative. He found a parallel between painting and music, and entitled many of his paintings "arrangements", "harmonies", and "nocturnes", emphasizing the primacy of tonal harmony. His most famous painting, Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1 (1871), commonly known as Whistler's Mother, is a revered and often parodied portrait of motherhood. Whistler influenced the art world and the broader culture of his time with his aesthetic theories and his friendships with other leading artists and writers. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
