Carlson (1930 - 2021) - Jane Carlson is known for her Impressionist painting. This is an absolutely stunning original watercolor by Jane C. Carlson. This painting is wonderfully framed in a wood frame and double matted and signed in the lower right hand corner. It measures approximately 30.5 inches x 20.5 inches while the watercolor itself measures 25 inches x 15.5 inches. This watercolor is in exceptional condition with beautiful color and detail. This painting was gifted to a friend in Bridgewater, Vermont about 20 years ago by a wealthy neighbor who told our friend that this was an original watercolor painting and that she knew the artist, Jane Carlson. As far as we can tell, we believe this to be the original watercolor painting of "Deep in the Woods" from which many prints and posters were later made. Jane Carlson was born Jane Cartwright in 1920, in Milton, Massachusetts. She notably studied at the Massachusetts College of Art, in addition to the prestigious Arts Student's League of New York City. Her style is often reminiscent of Impressionism with the way she portrays her subject matter. She comes from a long line of artists - her great-grandfather, David Claypool Johnston, a political satirist of the Civil War period, painted a portrait of President Lincoln. Her watercolors and oils have been exhibited in the U.S. Capital in Washington, D.C., and at the National Arts Club and the National Academy of Design in New York City. She won gold medals from the American Artists Professional League and the highest honors from the American Watercolor Society. Jane Carlson was a highly acclaimed and respected artist. She was also a model for 34 years and traveled the world. Her father was a respected photographer. Her father was a respected photographer. While she was studying at the Massachusetts College of Art, someone from the Society of Photographic Illustrators saw here and suggested she model in New York City. She was 19 years old and figured it would be an easy, lucrative summer job. Her parents were aghast. "I'd been asking my father to buy me a red convertible" she said. He said, "Stay in Boston and I'll buy you a red convertible." I told him, "I'll go to New York and buy one for myself." The summer job led to a Life Magazine cover and a contract with the Ford Agency - then on its way to becoming the world's top modeling agency. Carlson has great affection and respect for Eileen Ford, who led the agency in its glory years. "She was marvelous," Carlson said. "She was a great agent. She raised the rates for her models and the photographers would say, 'We can't afford that.' And Eileen would say, 'Fine. Go hire someone else.'" In her 30's, Carlson adapted to television, learning how to act and making hundreds of commercials. She had steady work as a model for 34 years, an astonishingly long career in a profession where beauty is fleeting and styles change fast. "I had a great run," she said. "I think I broke the record." In 1980 she called her agent and said she was retiring Modeling was getting in the way of her painting. Although she painted both inside and outdoors, she referred to herself as a studio painter. She continued painting for the next 40 years. This will be carefully packaged and shipped to you via USPS Mail, UPS or Federal Express including Insurance and Signature at DeliveryTHANKS FOR STOPPING BY
