It is a medium to large deciduous tree that typically matures to 50 to 75 feet tall with a broad rounded crown. It is generally cultivated for its attractive compound foliage and lightly fragrant late summer flowers. Pinnate leaves (to 10 inches long), each with 7-17 oval, lustrous, dark green leaflets, remain attractive throughout the growing season. Leaves retain green color late into fall, resulting in no fall color or at best an undistinguished greenish yellow. Small, fragrant, pea-like, creamy white flowers (each 1/2 inch long) bloom in late summer in sweeping terminal panicles to 12 inches long and to 12 inches wide, with about a three week bloom period. Flowers fall to the ground around the tree after bloom covering the ground with a blanket of white. Flowers give way to slender, 1 to 6 seeded, knobby, pendulous bean-like pods (3 to 8 inches long) that mature to brown in fall and persist into winter but are often eaten by the birds in October and November. Although not native to Japan, the specific epithet and common name seem to recognize the early use of the tree in Japan around Buddhist temples. Sophora japonica is one of the 50 fundamental herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine. Leaf: Alternate, pinnately compound, 6 to 10 inches long, 7 to 17 leaflets, individual leaflets ovate, 1 to 2 inches long, entire margin, green above, slightly lighter below. Flower: Creamy white, lightly fragrant pea-like, in a long hanging cluster, each flower 1/2 inch long, appearing in mid-summer. Fruit: Legume, yellow-green becoming light brown at maturity, 3 to 8 inches long, constricted between seeds, looks like a string of pearls, maturing in early fall, persisting all winter. Twig: Moderate, shiny green, lighter lenticels, raised nodes, leaf scar a deep U-shape encircling the small brown buds, no true terminal bud. Bark: Gray-brown, splitting into ridges and furrows, reddish brown in furrows, furrows mostly long and vertical.
