Description: Allen & Unwin, The Hobbit 1976 Deluxe, fine/fine. There are not many surprises with Tolkien rare books, but this is one of them. The price is higher than our other Hobbit 1976 listing as this Hobbit Deluxe has the very rare paper covered slipcase. Some number of the very first produced, not many, had a black texture paper covering the box. (see photo) This must of proved too delicate and they switched to the black vinyl you see on the rest deluxe editions. Sorry, I have no data on how many existed, only that in 21 years I've seen only five boxes like this. We have been a professional Tolkien dealer for over 20 years.
