Description: A beautiful sculpture of Yiddish, author Sholem Aleichem (1859-1916), whose stories were the basis for Fiddler on the Roof. Sculpted by Alexander Portnoff in Philadelphia in 1916, the year Sholem died. Alexander Portnoff (1887-1949) was a noteworthy sculptor and painter, whose models included Sholem Aleichem, Carl Sandburg, John Dewey, Leo Tolstoy, Beethoven, and W.E.B. Du Bois; his friends and contemporaries included famed artist August Rodin and Despiau. His teacher at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts was artist Charles Grafly. He won the honor award at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, at San Francisco, CA in 1915. He designed war memorials in eastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey, commissioned by the American Legion Posts and Citizen's Associations after WWI.
