Description: This beautiful 1947 Variation C Lionel #221 is in very good condition. I'm getting on up in years so starting to sell off my collection to save my son the trouble down the road. I bought it a couple of years ago as "untested," and sure enough it didn't run. I just wanted it to go on a shelf in my collection so wasn't too worried about it. I thought I would see what was keeping it from running before listing it. I found a piece at the bottom of the E Unit was broken, (see last photo) so I bypassed the e unit and it runs great forward. I didn't remove or shorten any wires, just reconnected them- it's all still there. So if you are familiar with e units, you can make the repair. When repaired, the motor should run in both directions. While in there, I cleaned the brushes and commutator, and lightly lubricated the wheels, gears, and linkage. The pickups are not worn all that much and the wheels are very clean. I didn't have to do anything to them. There are some flecks of paint missing, but there is no damage to the locomotive. All the side rods and linkage are present and functional. Headlight works. All original. All there-nothing missing. This has been well taken care of. Please see photos and video. I have a few other locos listed and will combine shipping if you buy 2 or more at the same time. So please see "seller's other items."------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Lionel Adriatic Type 2-6-4 New York Central Locomotive No. 221 was patterned after the famous Henry Dreyfuss designed Hudson type locomotive used by the New York Central railroad for their 20th Century Limited during the 1930’s. Lionel only left off one of the leading truck wheels making their version into an Adriatic type. Produced on a painted die-cast body, this locomotive was available in 1946 and 1947. The SILVER number is rubber-stamped on the sides of the cab, and it has ornamental safety valve and sand dome on top, along with a complete set of drive rod connecting valve gear on the sides. A three position directional unit that is adjustable from the top of the boiler controls the direction of this locomotive that is lighted in front through an oversized headlight lens. Came with a 221T or 221W sheet metal tender that have staple-end trucks with one electronic coupler. There are three variations: Variation A: GRAY body with cast aluminum drivers and a thick pilot. 1946 Production. Variation B: Same as Variation A except with black drivers. Variation C: BLACK body with nickel rimmed drivers and thin pilot. 1947 Production.
