Description: Lovely nude study "Juno" 1952 by Joan Craven 1897-1979. This is a halftone print from a vintage copy of Photograms of the Year 1952, the annual publication of the world's photographic art. Joan Mabel Craven was born Mabel Craven on 5 November 1897 in Headingley, Leeds, Yorkshire, the second of six children to Marshall Craven, a brewery clerk and bookkeeper, and his wife Lucy, née Lawson. Joan trained at society portrait photographer Dorothy Wilding’s studio and by late 1925 when she opened her own studio, had "pictured thousands of society and stage beauties." She exhibited widely and her work was published in society magazines from 1925 until 1932. The Sketch describing her as "the brilliant young society photographer whose artistic camera-studies are so well known to "Sketch" readers. She moved onto advertising photography, her clients including Condor Hats and Cadbury’s chocolate. According to Figure Quarterly in 1957 “Miss Joan Craven is the society-bred fine-featured descendant of a long line of Yorkshire Cravens. She is a small, delicate woman with a defiant will and an iron desire to remain a rugged individualist. On Bond Street she rubbed elbows with famous stage personalities during her youth, as well as prominent members of the nobility and gentry.” She found her artistic freedom in photographing nudes sharing studios with photographer Walter Bird at Kinocrat House on the Cromwell Road, London. By 1957 her work was described thus "her nudes, all classically expressive and full-bodied creatures, have long since made her financially independent. She works sporadically now, allowing plenty of time to 'just stand and stare at the natural treasures of life’.” Each item is delivered in an archival sleeve and hard backed envelope.
