The 89-91 S5 NA and TII shift blocks are notorious for sloppy shift levers due to deteriorated, broken nylon block bushings and broken shift centering spring. The replacement bushing is precision machined from Acetal/Delrin plastic. Replacing the shift centering spring should be done whenever the transmission is removed for service. While the shift centering spring can be replaced with the transmission in the car, it's an easy task with the trans out of the car.
