Description: A large mid-century original abstract ink and wash painting from the Venezuelan period of Spanish/Venezuelan/French avant garde artist Angel Luque (1927-2014). It is signed in the lower left and dated 1961. Good sized, the piece measures 26 x 30 5/8 inches and there is a collection or museum accession number and title penciled on the reverse. The artwork is in fine condition, just a faint hazy mat line around the very edges and some tape residue on the reverse, it should frame up beautifully. Angel Luque (1927-2014) was born in Cordoba, Spain, his life of artistic activity of runs between the cities of Madrid, Caracas and Paris. During his time in Madrid (1948-1955) he worked as a creative at the La Universal advertising agency and participated in some collective exhibitions (“Homage to Goya” at the Círculo de Bellas Artes, 1954 and “Artistas de Hoy” at the gallery- Fernando Fe) and an individual show at the Buchholz Gallery (1955). His years in Caracas (1955-1967) would be the consolidation of his personal style, opting for experimentation with geometric language. Soon attracting the interest of Venezuelan critics with his works exhibited at the XXI Annual Official Salon. Starting in 1960, he joined the activities of the Salón Espacios Vivientes and the Salón Experimental, becoming part of the El Techo de la Ballena group. In this period he works on highly relevant drawings and engravings, which start from free-line geometric structures and derive in shapes inspired by graffiti and children's drawings. Between 1962 and 1963 he made stage designs for the theater group of the Venezuelan-Italian Institute of Culture (Caracas). Starting in 1964, his political militancy made him interested in social issues, becoming involved in the kidnapping of soccer player Alfredo Di Stéfano (August 1963). He would even go to jail for the kidnapping of Colonel Smolen (October 1964). During these years he had a number of one man exhibitions at the Museo de Bellas Artes in Caracas. From 1968 he settled in Paris and worked in a geometric style until passing in 2014.
