Description: No more famous name comes to mind when thinking of the history of board games than that of Milton Bradley. Offered here is what I believe to be one of the few signatures of Milton Bradley (1836-1911) extant. The founder of the Milton Bradley Co credited with launching the board game industry is signed on this voucher payable from the the Pennsylvania Reform School dated 1892 in the amount of $5.23 to the Milton Bradley Co, Milton Bradley signing as Treasurer paid to the company account at the National Revere Bank, Springfield, Massachusetts. The voucher is also accompanied by the Milton Bradley Co. Monthly Statement of Account of the Penn. Reform School dated 1892 in the same amount. Accounts payable voucher 8.375 X 7. Monthly statement receipt 5.5 X 5.5. Fair condition with light stains as pictured.Bradley began his career as a draftsman and lithographer, owning the first lithographic press in Western Massachusetts and in 1860 invented a game called, “The Checkered Game of Life,” ancestor to the “Game of Life,” most familiar with adults today having played as kids. The game was an instant success for Bradley. He went on to manufacture a set of pocket-sized travel games, Games of Soldiers” marketed to soldiers during the Civil War. Later, board games produced as the nation experienced greater leisure time after the war led to great success for the company with many popular games produced through the 20thCentury remembered fondly by most adults today. The items offered here from Bradley’s account with a school represents Bradley’s strong interest in education as many of his games were promoted as educational. By the 1890’s Bradley had introduced watercolor sets, crayon packages (forerunner to Crayola), and published tracts and pamphlets on the kindergarten system of educational pioneer Friedrich Frobel.Decades later Milton Bradley would become integrated with Hasbro and Parker Brothers through mergers with their name disappearing from products in 2009.In 2004, Bradley was posthumously inducted into the Toy Industry Hall of Fame and in 2006 inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
