Description: A carte-de-visite portrait of Prince Albert produced after his death in December 1861, with a memorial caption in the lower margin and specially added black border around the image. Although unidentified here, the photographer is Oscar Rejlander. The sitting took place ‘upwards of twelve months’ before the Prince Consort’s death, according to the Photographic News (24 January 1862). Often called ‘the father of art photography,’ Rejlander was a Swede who settled in Wolverhampton in 1845, later moving to London in April or May 1862. Along with H.P. Robinson, he became one of the leading exponents of ‘high-art’ photography. His Two Ways of Life was a mammoth composite work which caused a sensation when it was exhibited in 1857. He died penniless in 1875. The carte-de-visite appears on page 114 of Cartomania, a new book on the carte phenomenon that was published last month. The book gives much more detail about the rush to buy portraits of the Prince Consort in the weeks after his death. Condition: please see scans. The print presents a few faint marks and some foxing in the area of the background. It is otherwise in fine condition, with good tonal range. The mount is in excellent condition, with crisp edges and sharp corners. Dimensions: the dimensions of a standard carte-de-visite are approximately 4.1" by 2.5" (10.5 cm by 6.3 cm). All photographs are securely packaged using recycled cardboard. I go to the post office at least twice a week, usually on Monday and Thursday. If buying more than one photograph, please use the 'add to basket' function as this will combine postage. Orders over £100 will only be shipped via registered mail, which costs £5 extra.
