Soft-covers usually have a thick binding tape put on before service to help book survive use, some soft-covers have a clear cover tape over the entire cover. Hard-covers usually have a clear cellophane or cover over the jacket to help them survive use. All will be complete and intact unless otherwise specified. So if you want to use media mail for 4 bucks, no insurance will be included, so once I give it to USPS there is nothing I can do. And it is typically scheduled for one week arrival. i.e. Michigan to LA, would be scheduled by USPS for 7 days to get there, using Media Mail. If you want the book faster, priority is the way to go.
