Product Description: This offering is for a new-old-stock (NOS) Suntour 8-speed PowerFlo (Accushift Plus II) cassette that includes an 11-12-14-16-18-21-24-28 cluster. This model cassette (in the black finish) was only compatible with Suntour's higher-end mountain bike component groups from the early 90's (i.e., XC Pro, XC Comp and XC Expert). They are index (or as Suntour used to call it, Accushift Plus) shifting capable. In 1993, it appears Suntour introduced their second generation AccuShift technology, as the cogs on this cassette are stamped "APII", which is an acronym for "Accushift Plus II." From what we can tell, the most significant difference between Suntour's first generation Accushift Plus (AP) cassettes and these PowerFlo (APII) cassettes is the "shift ramps" design of selected teeth to help facilitate the upshift to larger sprockets (a nice feature typically found on newer cassette offerings). Please also note this cassette includes the two-sprocket Micro-Drive lockring...so it's only compatible with a Micro-Drive freehub. Micro-Drive was Suntour's term for a compact drivetrain...with smaller chainrings and cogs for arguably modest weight savings, slight improvements in shifting and better chainring clearance. More specifically, the Micro-Drive freehub was made a little different from other Suntour freehubs in that it allowed for an 11T sprocket as a high gear, and the only way to achieve this reduced number of teeth was to shrink the inside diameter of the cog having the 11T. In the case of these 8-speed Micro-Drive cassettes, the two highest gears are connected with built-in spacers to form the lockring, but only the second highest gear...the 12T cog...is threaded. The 11T cog is attached to the 12T cog, but it does not thread. Instead, it hangs over the freehub in "space" between the threads and the locknut that touches the inside of the rear dropout. This allows for the 11T cog to have a smaller inside diameter, which is necessary to properly build an 11T sprocket. The reason we spend some time here is because we believe Suntour made a number of non Micro-Drive freehubs (including some 8-speed models) that might appear to be compatible with one of these Micro-Drive 8-speed cassettes, but they probably won't be a good fit. The main problem is the splines on an 8-speed non Micro-Drive freehub are likely too long...and made to accommodate 7 splined cogs and only one threaded cog. Then there is the Micro-Drive 8-speed freehub that is built to accommodate 6 splined sprockets and one threaded cog...while the smallest cog...with 11T...is attached to the one threaded cog, but sits in "space", as discussed above. The freehub spacing for these Micro-Drive cassettes, because they are of the 8-speed variety, appears to be 135 mm for the higher-end Suntour mountain bike freehubs of this era (and according our reference material, Suntour did not make a freehub in 1993 with locknut-to-locknut dimensions of 130 mm that was compatible with an 8-speed cassette, but they did make 135 mm freehubs that were only compatible with 7-speed cassettes, so please take care to make sure your 135 mm freehub is truly 8-speed compatible). Concerning alignment, we also thought it was worth noting these Powerflo cassettes/freehubs appear to have an extra (and raised) square notch in one of the splines, whereas first generation Accushift Plus (AP) cassettes/freehubs do not. We believe this is the case, because the Powerflo sprockets need to be aligned in a certain manner to ensure the shift ramp design works properly (similar to Shimano's HyperGlide design)...and with this extra square notch in one of the splines, the Powerflo sprockets may only "mount" one way to achieve this proper alignment. We bring this up because this extra notch will not allow an AP cassette to slide onto a Powerflo freehub, but a Powerflo cassette may be installed on an AP freehub...and as long as the Powerflo splined sprockets are connected with rivets...as is the case with this offering...then you should be able to use either a Powerflo freehub or an AP freehub with this cassette (because the rivets already have the sprockets properly aligned). Although, in the case of this cassette, you will want to make sure you are mounting it on a Micro-Drive freehub that can accommodate the two-sprocket lockring discussed above. In terms of condition, these cassettes came to us bulk-packed, so they were probably intended for OEM bike builds that never materialized. Still they are new and unused, and do not appear to have ever been mounted on a freehub. Note to international customers regarding shipping... We apologize to those that feel some of our international shipping charges are too high. We only charge actual shipping rates, but once an order exceeds a certain amount, we hesitate to use the least expensive US Postal Services First Class International service. We feel this way, because this service is not trackable or insurable...so more risk of loss. We prefer the US Postal Services Priority Mail International service for more expensive orders, because this service is trackable at USPS.com and insurable...so less risk of loss. Unfortunately, this service is more expensive, especially for smaller/lighter packages, relative to the First Class International service. We are sorry about these higher shipping costs, but hopefully our notes help to explain why this is the case. Note to international customers regarding customs... We also apologize to those that feel their country import taxes, duties and brokerage fees are excessive. As a small US business, we are required by customs' laws to declare each order as a retail sale. Additionally, the declared order value must be equal to total store purchases and/or winning auction bids (less any shipping costs, as these are not considered in the declared value). As a result, each customer will be responsible for paying his/her own country taxes, duties and brokerage fees, which will be collected upon delivery. Again, we apologize for these additional costs, but we cannot afford the penalties and fines that come with breaking customs' laws...so we have to strictly abide by them.
