Description: Since Pan American World Airways had done little in providing service to the Scandinavian countries, the Civil Aeronautics Board awarded Northwest Airlines a certificate to replace Pan American on this route, thus giving Northwest its first access to European markets. Service was originally scheduled to begin with DC-10s on June 8, 1978, but a strike of Northwest pilots caused a last-minute postponement.The strike was eventually settled and the airline inaugurated New York-Copenhagen-Stockholm service on March 31, 1979, and Boston-Glasgow-Copenhagen service on April 29, 1979. Unbeknownst to collectors, Northwest assigned Boeing 747 for these new routes instead of DC-10s and also prepared new cachets showing the proper equipment.This cover was carried on the April 29, 1979 inaugural Northwest Airlines flight from the Logan Airport Mail Facility in Boston, Massachusetts to Glasgow, Scotland (where it was backstamped) and is listed in The American Air Mail Catalogue as NW-F14fa.On April 15, 2008, Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines announced a merger agreement. The merger of the two carriers formed what was then the largest commercial airline in the world, with 786 aircraft. Delta Air Lines' brand survived, while Northwest's brand officially ended in 2009.
