Description: Organic Low-Spread Comfrey - Symphytum x uplandicum 'Bocking 14' On offer is a set of root cuttings & crown cuttings. All sets will have a mix of both. This variety grows easily from sections of root or from crowns with roots. You can chop up roots into pieces about an inch and a half and each will grow if your growing conditions are favorable. It's a reliable, useful, beautiful plants. Many gardeners who use permaculture or polyculture growing practices value comfrey for its many versatile uses in the garden. One ounce is three pieces, two ounces is five or six depending on how big they are, four ounces is at least 10. Please note! The roots are black or nearly black. They are supposed to be that way :) They are also a bit ugly, but don't let that stop you -- they grow into beautiful swans! This is the Bocking 14 variety of comfrey. Unlike other comfrey varieties that readily self sow from seed, this is a sterile variety, and it can only spread through the roots. It will not spread nearly as quickly as other varieties, but it does grow easily from the roots. In my experience growing it in northern Colorado, it grows easily and happily -- producing slightly fuzzy spear shaped leaves on purple stems. The flowers are a delight! They are trumpet shaped and beautiful. Because it's sterile, they last longer than flowers that produce viable seed. Comfrey can be used as an external medicine for things like wound healing (do your own research, however) or animal feed (do that research too). I am confident to recommend it for use in compost or the "chop and drop" approach to passive fertilization of trees or vegetable beds. It's a ‘dynamic accumulator’ -- its deep roots can fetch up a wide variety of nutrients even from heavy clay soil. Those nutrients end up in the robust leaves. When used in compost or as a mulch, these nutrients will feed back into the soil in a more accessible way for other plants to benefit from. This variety is the most nutrient dense of any sterile variety. It's a very hardy perennial; you’ll never need to buy it again! I ship about three times a week. Proudly packaged in recycled materials.
