Description: Original 1832 engraved antique plan of ancient Athens, with a panorama from drawings by Charles Robert Cockerell. It was published by Chapman & Hall for the Society of the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, London, and is dated 1832 in the lower margin. The image area measures 33.5 x 39.4 cm [13¼" x 15½"], and there are two distance scales — English and French. Labeled features include the Acropolis, Temple of Theseus, Stadium Panathenaicum, Theatre of Bacchus, Temple of Jupiter Olympius, and other important buildings and monuments, as well as the ancient and modern walls. There's an inset of the Acropolis of Athens at the upper right, locating the Pedestal of Rome & Augustus. The features on the map and the architectural elevations were drawn by William Barnard Clarke, and the engraving was done by Josiah Henshall. Condition: This map is in very good condition, with narrow margins all around. There are a few tiny chips along the outer edges, and a previous owner has applied paper tape as reiniforcement along the edges on the reverse side. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. It is an original, authentic antique map, not a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be genuine. The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge was founded in 1826 with the high-minded aim of making "useful" information available to self-taught members of the working and lower middle classes. Its maps are prized today for their superior quality, accuracy, and aesthetic appeal. Buy with confidence!
