Description: Original 1884 antique color lithographed double-page map of China, with decorative border, printed more than 140 years ago. The map locates the old bed of Huang-Ho, or the Yellow River, which had drained into the Yellow Sea until 1852, when its course shifted north to drain into the Pe-Chili Gulf, or the Bohai Sea. The map labels the Province of Kanshuh, stretching northwest across the Great Wall, between Mongolia and Tibet. Gansu is the today's name for Kanshuh. Also shown on the map are the Grand Canal, Hainan, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Formosa (Taiwan), Canton (Guangzhou), Nanking (Nanjing), Honan (Henan), Hupeh (Hubei), Pekin, later spelled Peking and changed to Beijing in 1979, and Liautung (Liaoning), where a "Barrier of Stakes" is located east of the Imperial Palace. The image area measures 36 x 29.6 cm [14¼" x 11¾"] on a larger sheet, and longitude is measured from Greenwich and Washington. Condition: The map is in excellent condition, bright and clean, with a horizontal center fold, as issued, and no marks, rips, or tears. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. This is an original, authentic antique map, not a reproduction or modern reprint. It was printed ten years before the First Sino-Japanese War, fought between the Qing dynasty of China and the Empire of Japan primarily over control of Korea. The map was compiled by George Franklin Cram and published in Chicago, Illinois in 1884. It would make a very handsome display in your den or office. It would also make a perfect gift, and we'll include our helpful framing tips for your reference, along with a photocopy of the dated title page from the book in which it was published.
