Description: ****This is a very nice, certainly antique Chinese classical art piece brought back from a missionary family in 1904 when they left Foochow, China. This art was acquired from the family during their stay in China, meaning this art is at least from 1904, but almost certainly older, however there are no dates present on this piece to confirm this. This painting is primarily of flowers in a vertical column, a very traditional subject matter from Asian countries. This piece features a lot of details packed into the medium, making very good use of a good majority of the space. This particular painting is both signed and stamped. Mild discoloration is present, as well as very small ripples, likely from the medium being pasted to a board. This painting measures approximately 30 x 13 inches, with the overall dimensions with the frame measuring approximately 33 x 16 inches. A simple wire hanger is on the back. From the personal collection of Ben H. Marsh, Acting President & Professor at Anglo-Chinese College Foochow China 1898-1904. Ben H. Marsh was a Methodist Episcopal Missionary appointed to Anglo-Chinese College in Foochow China in 1898, he married his wife Evelyn C. Pinkney in Foochow in 1900, they had 2 daughters that were born in Foochow. Mrs. Marsh was the Principal at the Foochow Graded school for children of foreign residents. Mr. Marsh died suddenly June 18th 1904 in Foochow and is buried there. Mrs. Marsh decided to return to America in July 1904. We recently acquired 6 large boxes of items that were brought back to the United States from Foochow China in 1904 by Evelyn C. Marsh. Items that we will be selling including books, photographs, documents, porcelain, art, jewelry, and more. The vast majority of items are from Foochow, given to or purchased by the Marsh's, there are a few Japanese porcelain items that were purchased by Mrs. Marsh when she traveled to Kobe Japan.
