Disbound, plate, 280pp. This first issue of a short-lived periodical was published by Coopers friend C.K. Gardiner. It includes Two Letters, -- Upon the Lands, Settlements, &c of the Western States and Territories. The anonymous letters describe trips to the West and South with details on settlements, terrain, land values and the residents. It is known that Cooper made a number contributions anonymously to this periodical, and there is some speculation (see ChatGPT) that they were authored by Cooper who was testing new forms of fiction just prior to the publication of his first novel later in 1820. In any event the letters remain obscure and not referenced in any of the standard bibliographies. The plate and title page have an embossed library stamp. The title page is stained from a long biography of the donor pasted on the verso. Text is clean. We do combine shipping!
