Description: After extensive private research, my wife and I truly believe this is an authentic Pablo Picasso Madoura piece, one of 500 from 1956. My wife has a very good working knowldedge of Picasso's work. We compared every inch of this piece to at least three authenticated originals of the same work and literally everything between this piece and the others are a perfect match in every spec. The bottom is signed 'Edition Picasso'. Some of the same have 'Madoura' signed as well, but not all. The authenticated examples, some do not have Madoura signed on them. Signature is solid, fluid and shows proper age wear in areas. There are two marks on underside. One is Edition Picasso. The other , 'Madoura Plein Feu'. The two marks show age and are in the precise locations of the authenticated ones. They are also the same size. There is a blue dot on lip of exterior of pitcher. This, I believe may be intentional for again, all authenticated pieces have the exact same mark in color and size. The same color blue varies in piece to piece. This piece has a nice amount of blue in the white faun head, underneath it and around handle decorations. The piece is partially glazed and made of white earthenware clay. Small blue glaze dot in black to left of white faun, made that way, possibly a maker's flaw. At right bottom of white faun face, flaws in black, I believe made that way. Pinhole areas on bottom of piece and inside opening. Light wear on area of dark colored rim. Bottom has appropriate age wear. Has felt pads on bottom; as found with piece. Piece will have pottery lumps, bumps, spots, dots and pinholes; all to be expected with handmade pottery. Dirty on inside; I left alone.
