A very rare, high style pair of French Empire ormolu sconce or wall lights in the style of Pierre-Philippe Thomire. Circa 1810. PROVENANCE: Sotheby's, Paris, Important Mobilier, Sculptures, Objets D'Art et Tableaux, April 27, 2017, lot 255. Sold for 3500 EURO plus 25% buyers premium which is approximately $4400. The patinated winged cherubs are supported by a classical brackets which is a form rarely seen. The cherubs are holding a loft three arms for candles. The palms held by the cherubs are not original but are replacements of the appropriate form. A similar model is illustrated in H. Ottomeyer and P. Proschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, t. I, p. 356, fig. 5.10.3: another copy bearing the signature of the bronzer Claude-François Rabiat is mentioned. Very good condition with original gilding. ORIGINAL MOUNTING BRACKETS As seen in the photographs, the brackets have been drilled for electricity as have the bobèches and candle cups.
