Description: Capella Antiqua München: German Choir from Munich founded in 1956 by Konrad Ruhland, now defunct. Konrad Ruhland: Konrad Xaver Ruhland (born 19 February 1932 in Landau an der Isar; † 14 March 2010 in Deggendorf) was a German music historian, music teacher, conductor and music editor. Ruhland had his first contact with music as a cathedral choirboy at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Passau. He studied musicology in Munich with Thrasybulos Georgiades and Theodor Göllner. Further courses in history, theology and church history formed the background for his musicological research. After attending a concert by the Brussels ensemble "Pro Musica Antiqua" under Safford Cape, nine enthusiastic students came together in Munich in 1956 under Ruhland's direction to form the "Capella Antiqua München", one of the first groups to deal with Renaissance music and the music of the early Baroque during their studies. Over time, the ensemble grew to 19 musicians and recorded numerous records. Between 1968 and 1991, Ruhland worked at the St. Gotthard Gymnasium in his hometown of Niederalteich. There, together with his wife Elisabeth (music teacher from 1968 to 1995), he played a decisive role in shaping the quality of musical education and the associated reputation of the school. Based on his many years of musical practice in the field of historical performance practice, he founded the Niederaltaich Scholars in 1976, a concert choir with which he dedicated himself to Gregorian chant and hitherto little-known works and composers. Ruhland has made a name for himself as a scholar and as an editor and has published several hundred works by composers, mainly from southern Germany. In addition, he passed on his knowledge in summer courses, such as at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. For his work, Ruhland was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit First Class in 2004.
