Description: Peterson Donegal Rocky 106 Rusticated Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, Irish Estates Peterson Donegal Rocky 106 Rusticated Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, Irish Estates Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin. This is a very curious Peterson, which I am always happy to see. In this instance, the reason for the strangeness of the pipe is its finish: the Donegal Rocky is a series that Peterson has produced since 1945, but this one doesnt look like the contemporary version. As Mark Irwin over at Peterson Pipe Notes superbly documents, the style of rustication of the Donegal Rocky has changed numerous times over the years, just as Petersons other rusticated finishes have. Judging by the pebble grain rustication on this one, it would appear to be from the 1980s. The condition is fair. Some darkening and a couple of spots of char on the rim.
