About the Artist Pieter Bruegel is known as the most significant artist of the Dutch and Flemish Renaissance. Although he painted landscapes and a few religious pictures, his artwork mainly focused on the people and manners of the Dutch peasantry, which was rare at a time when most artist's paintings were of the elite or religious nature. Quite wealthy himself, Pieter's took an interest in lives of the peasants and his paintings have left us with a greater understanding of the experiences of the poor in Europe, and especially the Netherlands, in the 1500's.Pieter Bruegel is know as the Elder to distinguish him from his son, Pieter Bruegel who was also an artist.
