Description: An original nineteenth century mezzotint engraving by George Atkinson (flourished 1850s/60s) after a painting by Henry Barraud (1811-1874). A stunning portrayal of Sir Philip Howard, 13th Earl of Arundel (1557-1595) standing in a stone room. He is leaning against the wall over the fire, a wooden chair behind and his faithful dog in the foreground. In one hand he is holding a knife with which he has just inscribed the words 'Quanto plus afflictionis pro Christo in hoc saeculo. Tanto plus gloriae cum Christo in futuro / Arundell 1587' (the more afflictions for Christ in this world, the more glory in the next'. Philip Howard was an Elizabethan aristocrat who was charged with being a Catholic and joining in Jesuit plots. He was imprisioned in the Tower of London where he was kept for 10 years until his death from dysentary in October 1585. Whilst imprisoned he was constantly in fear of execution and took some comfort from the companionship of a dog through which he exchanged messages with other prisoners, most notably the poet Robert Southwell. (This dog is shown with him in a statue at Arundel Cathedral). He is remembered for his adherence to his faith, and carved the words shown in the engraving on the wall of his cell. In 1970 he was Canonised by Pope Paul Vl as one of the 'Forty Martyrs of England and Wales'. The mezzotint is in excellent condition apart from a small crease line from the bottom right hand edge which stretches about one inch to the side of the dog's head. It has been trimmed to the plate so the title and artists details are no longer present. It is rare, usually only seen in institutional collections - the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of New York hold impressions. Measures 47.5 x 43cm. Postage £7 to mainland UK, £18 to mainland Europe and £30 to the USA. About me - I am a very experienced retailer and am qualified in Art History.
