There's never any question as to the quality of the instrument you're getting when you get any PRS guitar. But there's something magical with these Private Stocks and, at the end of the day, they're unique and simply unlike any other PRS guitar out there. For this one, we started with a Custom 24 Piezo model, already a quintessential PRS instrument in its own right, and outfitted it with absolutely stunning pieces of stained curly maple and extravagant aesthetic appointments. Along with the Charcoal Smokeburst-stained Curly Maple used for both the neck back, body top, and fingerboard, another distinct wood choice is the Swamp Ash body, which not only looks great but also imparts a focused tonality to the natural resonance of the instrument. The clear nitro finish really brings out the natural beauty of the grain and contrasts well with the black and grey tones of the Charcoal Smokeburst. It goes without saying that the real star of the show here visually is the fretboard and headstock veneer. Using insanely-figured pieces of curly maple for both along with the uniform Charcoal Smokeburst, PRS added a masterful additional stroke by using ebony for the binding. This creates an absolutely breathtaking appearance that's classy, striking, and cohesive all at once. Along with the black & white web stone ‘J’ Bird inlays and black Mother of Pearl outlines, your eyes are immediately drawn to the phenomenal sight of the neck. For this build, we selected the tried-and-true 85/15 TCI set. The majority of Custom 24s these days are coming with 85/15 TCI pickups, and for good reason. These are a faithful evolution of the pickups that put Paul Reed Smith on the map, but now they come TCI-tuned, which, long story short, makes them even better than they were before! They sit in a just slightly-hotter-than-vintage level of output to cover that base if that's what you need, but can also more than handle their own in more modern settings as well. They handle saturation and distortion with grace and ease. The Swamp Ash body and ebony/maple fretboard add some nice brightness to the tone that further help it to cut through in a dense mix while playing with heavy distortion, and the ebony pickup rings add a very subtle touch of class and luxury to each pickup visually. And if that's not enough, this guitar has an amazing piezo system to give you a range of acoustic-like tones, and it can also be mixed in with your magnetic tones to create some really beautiful, crisp, and crystal clear sounds.
