Purple Coneflower Seeds - Echinacea purpurea - B230

Description: Coneflower, the Butterfly magnet! Perennial purple coneflowers (Echinacea purpurea) produce blossoms featuring deep purple petals radiating out from and around a central cone. The cone produces many seeds that provide winter feed for visiting birds. Coneflowers thrive in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 3 through 9, where they require minimal care and can tolerate drought well. The plants germinate readily when sown directly in the garden bed, although they may not flower until the second year after planting. Break up the soil to an 8 inch depth in a well-drained bed that receives full sunlight. Spread 2 inches of compost over the top of the bed and work it into the loosened soil to further improve drainage and nutrient quality in the planting site. Spread the seeds over the prepared bed once the soil temperature warms to 55 degrees Fahrenheit in early spring. Sow approximately 1 seed per every 2 to 4 square inches to ensure even coverage in case some seeds don't germinate. Spray the bed with a fine mist of water, using a garden hose sprayer. Water only if the soil surface begins to dry, avoiding sharp sprays of water that can wash away the seeds. Cover the seeds with a one-eighth-inch layer of soil once they begin to germinate and sprout, approximately 10 to 20 days after sowing. Continue to mist the soil surface with water as needed. Thin the coneflowers so the remaining plants are spaced approximately 18 inches apart after the seedlings grow to about 6 inches tall. Pull any weeds that invade the coneflower bed until the plants are tall enough to shade out the weeds naturally.
