Horace Mann (b. 4 May 1796, Franklin, MA; d. 2 Aug 1859, Yellow Springs, OH), the great educational reformer, practiced law before winning a seat in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, where he served from 1827 to 1833. From 1835 to 1837, he served in the Massachusetts Senate, spending time as the majority leader. He was also known to be an antislavery militant.George Robert Russell (b. 5 May 1800, Providence, RI; d. 5 Aug 1866, Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA), of Russell & Company, was a successful merchant turned philanthropist. In mid-June 1856, in Philadelphia, he was a Delegate to the Republican National Convention from West Roxbury, Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. There he served as a member of the Committee on Permanent Organization.
