In 1864, Henry O. Houghton partners with Melancthon Hurd and forms Hurd & Houghton. In 1878, Hurd & Houghton acquires J.R. Osgood & Company (1871-1878). Then Hurd retires in 1878, and Henry Houghton and James Osgood change the name of the company to Houghton, Osgood & Company. In 1880, the partnership between Osgood and Houghton dissolve. Houghton elevates George Mifflin to a full partner and changes the name of the company to Houghton Mifflin & Company. Many of the 1878 first edition books I have seen are either James R. Osgood & Company or Houghton Mifflin & Company but not Houghton, Osgood & Company. Therefore, it appears that this version with Houghton, Osgood & Company predates these other versions of this book. Charles Dudley Warner (1829-1900) was an American essayist, novelist and a friend of Mark Twain, with whom he co-authored the novel The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today. Charles Dudley Warner is known for making the famous remark "Everybody complains about the weather, but nobody does anything about it" which has been misattributed to Mark Twain. Being A Boy is a semi-autobiographical work detailing the joys and struggles of being an American farm boy.
