Description: This item was designed for absolute secrecy while voting. A member would first insert their hand into the high end of the voting box and select a white or black marble. They would then drop it into the small round receptacle in the center of the box. The results would be accessible in the drawer once voting was complete. For security purposes the drawer has a lever to keep it locked. This was a common item that was used back in the 1800s. “Blackballing” is a term signifying a rejection in the traditional form of secret ballot voting, where a white ball or ballot constitutes a vote in support and a black ball signifies opposition. A wonderful Political collectible. In very good vintage condition with some minor scruffs and scratches, more so on the underside. The inside of the box and drawer are lined with grey felt. The sides and bottom are solid birch wood and the top is birch veneer. Measurements are 11.75” in length, 6” in width and 6.5” in height.
