A revolution in enameling occurred in the late 15th century when the family of Pénicaud innovated a new method of "Painting" with enamels. As this was developed in the French town of Limoges, the method is called limoges. This was the first time that enamel colors touched each other without the use of separating wires or metal. Using this method, portraits and other scenes could realistically be reproduced. The art of portraiture was highly developed by the great 16th century enamelists Leonard Limousin and Pierre Reymond.Description: WE HAVE OWNED THIS BEAUTY FOR MANY MANY YEARS - THIS IS 1ST TIME TO EVER BE OFFERED ~ YOU'LL LIKELY NEVER SEE ANOTHER LIKE IT!!! Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 18th to possibly very early 19th Century unsigned Limoges Enamel on copper Salt Cellar, Snuff Box, Tea Caddy A breath-taking Limoges hand-painted en grisaille painted colorful foil enamel with ormalu embossed circular lidded box depicting a spectacular & very life-like Renaissance portrait of Catherine de' Medici & 3 other Classical Roman Gods & Goddesses, attributed to the style of Pierre Reymond who lived (1513-1584) in Limoges France. 5” (inches) Tall overall X 2 5/8” Inner Diameter 3” Tall without lid X approx 3” Wide at widest points top & bottom Small, cylindrical, enamel keepsake/trinket/dresser/powder/humidor/salt/snuff/tea box from Limoges. The lid is decorated with two oval medallions featuring the profile of a helmeted Roman God & Goddess. Large oval colorful portrait medallions & raised relief fleur-de-lis (like) scrolling patterns adorn the four sides of the box, with 24K gold painted ornate patterns throughout all surfaces of lid & box. The portrait medallions are surrounded by leafy scrollwork and rinceau, which creates a beautiful contrast with the deep dark background. Almost no wear to the gilding and enamel – very pristine & well preserved for the delicate construction & age! This astoundingly beautiful lidded container is loaded with Renaissance – type embellishments over a fully enameled in black base – inside & out. The embossed white black & gold foliate décor between the portraits is almost symmetrical, but very lively – all hand-formed & painted. There are four profiles: 3 Classical Roman & 1 Italian Renaissance – 2 each on the base & on the lid. All colors appearing on the busts are gold, red, blue crinkled foil with outlines in real 24K gold leaf. The faces are all painted in grey tones on white underpaintings with a thick coat of clear enamel (glass) as a protective surface. The technique of en-grisaille (painting in white & black shaded tones) was used in the 18th & early 19th centuries on buttons, jewelry, & “objects de virtue” but did not appear much after the 19th century. The lid fits nicely & snugly, the surfaces are very well-preserved. There are very few minor scratches or crazing.
