Description: When I saw this antique "slip shade" pendant years ago I had to have it. It has the elegance of Art Deco with the frosted and cast slip shades, combined with the nickel/chrome "HG Wells" futurism of the machine age! Very "Fred Astaire, Jean Harlow" Hollywood or "1939 NY World's Fair" inspired. You decide, nothing quite like it. It's a wow. Then I learned from a lighting collector it was in fact a rare piece made by "Markel Lighting" in about 1937. Joseph Markel first founded his lighting company in Rochester NY in the early 1920's and made lighting up until the mid 1950s. His lamps were known for their sophisticated style and design, and are considered to be a "holy grail" of sorts in the history of American Art Deco lighting. Restorers and collectors seek these fixtures out and this model is actually an uncommon "6 shade" version (most are odd numbers) with an armillary sphere. I'm told the finial is rather rare as well, as it was made in different versions, the catalog page shows a later variation, this is the original. So unique! Roughly 20" tall by 20" diameter as a perfect midsized pendant and would add an authentic touch of Hollywood glamour to any room. It did for me! The futuristic "atomic" armillary sphere would work well in a mid-century room too. The bottom finial is a switch in the on position. I prefer things in their original condition and this is such. Chrome/nickel condition varies part by part and is typical for it's age and it could use some detailing and trued a bit, but most I've seen are made slightly askew. Most important, is it's complete (the white cloth wiring and sockets seem so) and the slip shades, which are the toughest thing to find are intact. The only piece missing is the canopy which can be replaced easily with chrome. Small chips or any imperfections in the finish that are visible are shown in pictures. I've tried to show the condition transparently. Because slip shades are very fragile, there will have to be more than the usual packing, driving weight and size of boxing a bit. Questions, more pictures, and offers considered and welcomed. Local pickup preferred, but can ship too. It needs the right home, I love this thing. Insurance paid by buyer for full value. Thanks for your attention!
