Rare Massachusetts Outsider Artist Albert Freeman Portrait Painting. C1950's

Description: For sale is one of several original outsider art paintings that we are selling here in our eBay store(See Store for others) Albert Freeman was the rare northeastern outsider artist who created artworks in the style that we generally see in southern outsider and folk art artists. Further research on his life is needed to fully understand his output, visions, and inspirations. Provenance: The Grant Collection, New York; thence by Freeman's Auction Philadelphia PA) This work was exhibited in an exhibition titled "American Hurrah" according to an affixed label with the then price of the work (see pics) She is absolutely charming in her matching earrings and necklace gazing happily and joyfully at the viewer with her big bushy hair!! Just a wonderful example of American outsider art that could hang along the works of many of the great and highly collected folk art artist today. His works occasionally go through auction at the world renowned Outsider Art auction house Slotin Folk Art in Georgia. Condition: Overall good for age. Measurements: Framed - 16 1/4" x 15 1/4" Artwork - 11" x 10" Not much info can be found on his career. We did find this: Albert Freeman is an outsider artist we might not ever know much about. I believe his work was discovered by Robert Cargo, long time collector, dealer and advocate of southern 20th century American folk art. Mr. Freeman was active from 1940 to 1950’s His works have been acquired by prominent folk art collectors and many institutions including the Birmingham Museum of Art Provenance. While not illustrated, they acquired a dozen or so Freeman works. I find several good examples of his work online. Most are portraits like the pair above, although a small painting of a lion is illustrated in the outsider art chapter of Wendy Lavitt's Animals in American Folk Art in 1990. All were done on scrap paper and found cardboard. Mr. Freeman was active from 1940 to 1950. Untltled (Man and Woman(pair of portraits) circa 1940.
