Description: JOHN JAMES AUDUBON. John James Audubon (1785–1851) was a Haitian-born American ornithologist and artist whose monumental pictorial studies of the birds and quadrupeds of North America take a place among the most distinguished accomplishments in the history of zoology and natural history illustration. His masterpiece, the Birds of America, took twelve years of meticulous work to complete. The 435 hand-colored aquatint engravings, masterfully rendered by Robert Havell, were originally printed on huge double-elephant folio paper, depicting North American birds in their full life-size glory. This original Havell Edition is the first and most sought-after printing, estimated that only 175 complete sets were produced, and the second most valuable rare book in the world next to the Gutenberg Bible (a copy sold for $9.65 million at Christie’s in June 2018). ORIGINAL “RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, FALCO LINEATUS, PLATE 56” HAND-COLORED ENGRAVING FROM THE DOUBLE-ELEPHANT FOLIO EDITION OF JOHN JAMES AUDUBON’S BIRDS OF AMERICA Original “Red-Shouldered Hawk, Falco Lineatus, Plate 56” hand-colored aquatint engraving from the double-elephant folio edition of John James Audubon’s Birds of America.
