ROBERT TYLER - TREASURY WARRANT SIGNED 06/14/1862 - HFSID 48467 ROBERT TYLER John Tyler's eldest son signs a Confederate Treasury Warrant. Partly Engraved DS: "Ro: Tyler" as Register of the Treasury of the Confederate States, 1p, 8½x4. Richmond, 1862 June 14. Countersigned: "E.C. Elmore" as Treasurer of the Confederate States. Treasury Warrant for $34.20 payable to Jas. J. Crumbby (sic) and endorsed: "Jas. J. Crumbley" on verso. ROBERT TYLER (1816-1877) was the eldest son and second child of John and Letitia Christian Tyler, Tyler's first wife (with whom he had eight children). Robert had served as private secretary to his father, tenth U.S. President John Tyler, who had died five months before this warrant was signed. On August 1, 1861 ex-President Tyler, a Virginia aristocrat, had served as a delegate to the Provisional Congress of the Confederate States, becoming the only President of the United States to commit treason. Tyler was elected a member of the House of Representatives of the permanent Confederate Congress on November 7, 1861, but never took his seat. He died at Richmond, Virginia on January 18, 1862 before the Congress assembled. The United States government made no announcement, proclamation or official notice of his death. Bank stamp and "491" written in red ink on front do not touch signatures. "X" cut cancellation just touches the "C" in Crumbley's signature on verso. Folds, vertical fold touches the "R" in Tyler's first name. Nailhead-size hole at left margin. Overall, fine condition.
