Holding globus cruciger and labarum-tipped sceptre. Reverse: + COҺST ЄҺ ӨЄO ЬA SILЄVS ROMЄOҺ. Legend in four lines. Mint: Constantinople Size: 26.7 mm Weight: 5.39 grams Earthen deposits provide highlighting on this nice follis of the fourth emperor of the Macedonian dynasty. Constantine VII was the son of Leo VI and his fourth wife, Zoe Karbonopsina; and the nephew of his predecessor Alexander. The epithet "porphyrogenitus" alludes to the Purple Chamber of the imperial palace, decorated with porphyry, where legitimate children of reigning emperors were normally born. Constantine VII was also born in this room, although his mother Zoe had not been married to Leo at that time. Nevertheless, the epithet allowed him to underline his position as the legitimate son, as opposed to all others, who claimed the throne during his lifetime. Constantine VII is best known for overseeing the compilation of the Geoponika , an important agricultural treatise. He also authored four books; De Administrando Imperio, De Ceremoniis, De Thematibus , and (maybe) Vita Basilii. Policies I apply the highest ethical standards in selling ancient coins.
