A well struck follis from early in Maurice's reign. Some evidence of overstriking on center of both faces. Maurice Tiberius was a highly successful Roman solider-emperor from the 6th century. He is also credited with authorship of Strategikon, a manual of warfare and generalship, essentially the Byzantine version of Sun Tzu's Art of War. Maurice brought Justin II's two decade-old war with Persia to a victorious end, halted the Lombard advance in Italy, and crossed the Danube -- the first emperor to do so in over 200 years --to campaign against the Avars in Wallachia. Despite all his military accomplishments, Maurice also instituted some unpopular financial reforms which ultimately led to him getting fragged by his own officer, Phocas. Bummer.
