Description: This is a very ancient style basket made by braiding and then coiling corn husks; made by Paul St John, Mohawk craftsman. From an old textbook "Twined cornhusk baskets are made by many eastern Woodland Native Americans, including the Iroquois. One such basket, called 'Ganoseha', was made to contain coarse corn meal or used historically to store salt. The Iroquois word for this basket is 'Gushada', which translates as into English as 'bottle'. A stopper made from a corn cob was used to keep these bottles sealed." This round bottomed basket is about 4.5" in diameter and the bottom is about 2" high. I will send you 1 of these baskets - they are very similar so not offering a choice. There are 2 of these baskets - 1 has a longer neck, 2.5" long (this is a somewhat more narrow neck) - the other's neck is 1.75" (this is a somewhat wider neck). With the corn cob stoppers inserted these are about 5.5" high. Both are soft and somewhat flexible - these were made for use/storage. 2nd to last photo is slideshow above is an old drawing of Iroquois corn husk baskets..... you can see these are somewhat amorphous shapes - ... Last photo in slideshow is of Paul and a friend. - Photo illustrates Paul's real connection with the creatures he often depicts in his work Paul St. John lives in Maine, his mother was Passamaquoddy/Malisee/Mi'kmaq. He grew up on the Mohawk lands in New York, his father's homeland and is an enrolled Mohawk tribal member. - When I saw his work I knew immediately I needed to offer his great baskets. Watch this store for more of his pieces. Can't wait to see what he is going to create next. Paul has made many quill animals, fox, bear, beaver, deer, wolf, moose - and even more birds, cardinal, eagle, loon, blue jay, hawk, hummingbird, great blue heron, chickadee - Many many others - see if your favorite is in this ebay store. He not only does sweetgrass coil baskets and porcupine quill work on birch bark -- but also amazing dolls, Iroquois beadwork, MicMac beadwork, great moccasins, knife sheaths, medicine bags and so much more! He is truly a man of many (many many) talents! Watch this store for more of his pieces. Can't wait to see what he is going to create next.
