Description: Saturday Evening Girls, a women’s club founded in the 1890’s by three women, worked to better the lives of poor immigrant ladies in the North End of the Boston area. Funded by a wealthy philanthropist, Helen Storrow, the club taught the young women various skills so that they would be able to earn a living here in the states. Shortly after the turn of the 20th century, the arts and crafts movement was introduced to the club at which time Mrs Storrow decided to teach pottery classes to the young ladies. One such young woman joining the club in the 19 teens was Eva Geneco. Using her talents, she became a celebrated artist at the pottery whose works are avidly sought and collected today. She was known to producing many beautiful objects with stunning designs. The club also produced utilitarian pieces for every day use, one example would be this dinner plate dated September 1922 and signed by Miss Geneco. The matte glaze has a textured yet smooth feel and the pottery shape is well executed. The piece measures 10 1/8” diameter. I have cleaned and inspected this item under magnification, and can find no chips, cracks, damage, or repairs. I will mention and possibly visible in some of the pictures minute pinpoint glaze pops common with early art pottery. I also included a picture of an area where the glaze is slightly lighter on the front side, mentioned for accuracy sake. Miss Geneco’s signature along with S. E. G. and the date 9-22 clearly visible on the back. This example most likely was part of a set produced by this renowned artist. Please view all pictures as they are considered part of the description. Please check back to my listings often as I will be posting numerous fine examples of glass, pottery and porcelain in the near future. Thank you.
